Yukon and Carcross-Tagish FN approve 20-year plan

The Yukon government and the Carcross-Tagish First Nation have approved a local area plan that directs both governments in creating development regulations for the Carcross area.

Chief Dan Cresswell says the plan provides a 20-year development guide.

"There would be zoning in there, there would be places where you can develop, places where you can't, so all them, beachfront, the desert, any of the little subdivisions, downtown, it's all addressed in the plan," he said.

The plan identifies the Carcross Desert as a park reserve. It acknowledges the development potential for Bennett Beach and identifies the need for a new cemetery.

It also maps out an alternate access route into Carcross, as long trains sometimes block the only road into town.

Similar community plans are in the works for Tagish and Marsh Lake.
