Yukon Astronomical Society shoots for the stars
'I want to build an observatory here,' says founder
Since he was a boy growing up in Hungary, Viktor Zsohar says he loved looking at the night sky.
"I just started to love the stars, love astronomy, and I started to go to the local club," he said.
Zsohar and his two partners want to create a such a place in Whitehorse. They're founding the Yukon Astronomical Society to help popularize the science of the stars.
"In my heart came the desire, I want to build an observatory here," Zsohar said.
Zsohar says the society should be able to partner with the education system. He says it's important for young people to be exposed to different types of science.
"I think it is very important, especially for the youth, if they can engage in some way in science, it will direct their future."
The society also hopes to partner with the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada. Zsohar says they can share their observations from the Yukon with the rest of the world
Plans for an observatory are in the early stages, though the idea has been presented to the city of Whitehorse.
Zsohar said the initial response has been positive. He hopes it's a reality within a few years.
Public interest is high, Zsohar says. In just a month the society has 30 registered members.
