Yukon unemployment rate more than double what it was a year ago
Jobless figures edge down in July, but 1,000 fewer people employed than last summer
There are 1,100 fewer Yukoners working compared to this time last year, according to the latest monthly figures from the Yukon Bureau of Statistics.
In July, there were 19,000 people working in the territory, down from around 20,100 a year ago.
Since this time last year, Yukon's unemployment rate has jumped almost four percentage points to 7.8 per cent. That's up from just under four per cent in July of last year.
The unemployment rate is down slightly from 8.3 per cent last month.
The total number of unemployed — defined as working-age people who are looking for work but can't find it — was 1,600 in July. That's twice as many as this time last year, but down 100 from June.
The Yukon rate remains higher than Canada's national unemployment rate of 6.8 per cent.
