The current Halifax music scene takes centre stage in a new documentary.

Space for a Scene was inspired by the Road to the Junos concert series in February 2024 ahead of Halifax hosting the event.

It traces the connections between Halifax musicians featured in that series through interviews and live performance footage.

Those musicians include Aquakultre, Rose Cousins, Jenn Grant, Daniel Ledwell, Adam Baldwin, Tori Cameron, Jah'mila and Reeny, Hailey and Micah Smith.

"There's just so much community in the Halifax scene where everybody is looking to raise each other up, rather than it being a cutthroat, competitive atmosphere," said Jeff Miller, the film's director.

"It's definitely quite a bit more community oriented and everybody's there to see each other shine."

Musician Jenn Grant said her kids consider Aquakultre, a.k.a. Lance Sampson, their uncle.

"We're tight," said Grant. "The families are tight. We're raising our kids together."

Sampson said in any collaborative project, getting to know someone first makes the end result better because everyone is more comfortable.

"We're going to get to know each other on a friendship level before any business takes place," he said.

Space for a Scene is part of the Absolutely Canadian series and is available on CBC Gem.
