Nova Scotia's police watchdog is investigating after a man died after spending the night in police custody in Digby, N.S.

In a news release issued Tuesday, RCMP said they responded to a call at a business on Warwick Street at 3 p.m. AT Monday, where they arrested a man outside for public intoxication.

RCMP said the man was taken to the local detachment and stayed in a cell overnight.

Police said the man went into medical distress at 7 a.m. Tuesday. Paramedics were called and first aid was performed on the man. He was taken to hospital and declared dead.

Neither a statement from RCMP or Nova Scotia's Serious Incident Response Team (SIRT) say how old the man was or where he was from.

SIRT investigates all serious incidents that arise from police actions in Nova Scotia.
