An 89-year-old man is dead after a "kayaking incident on the water" on Wednesday off the coast of Dunfield, N.L., says the RCMP.

Police responded to a report of an unresponsive kayaker in distress just before 11:30 a.m. NT.

The RCMP said the man was paddling with a group in the Trinity Bay area when he experienced an unexpected medical event.

The Canadian Coast Guard and a tour boat company helped the RCMP transport the man to shore, where he was pronounced dead by paramedics.

The man was a tourist visiting from the United States.

The RCMP said the U.S. Consulate General and the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner have been notified.

The investigation is continuing.
