Murder charge in 2010 killing of Ryan White
Halifax man was shot dead
A man has been charged with the 2010 murder of Ryan Matthew White, say Halifax Regional Police.
White was killed on July 22, 2010, on the 100 block of Jarvis Lane in Halifax.
Police added his killing to the rewards program for major crimes in 2012. As a result, they've charged 25-year-old Kale Leonard Gabriel with second-degree murder.
This is the third time a charge has been laid related to cases in the rewards program. The Nova Scotia Department of Justice added the White case to its list of major unsolved crimes last year.
The program, which started in 2006, offers up to $150,000 for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the murder. To date, no money has been paid out.
Gabriel, from Dartmouth, is currently incarcerated at the Hamilton Wentworth Detention Centre in Ontario on an unrelated matter.
He'll be transported to Nova Scotia at a later date to appear in Halifax provincial court on the murder charge.
Police arrested two men in 2012 in connection with the murder, but released them without charges. Halifax Regional Police Supt. Jim Perrin confirmed that Gabriel was one of those arrested in 2012.
White, 21, was found dead on the pavement outside a building in the Mulgrave Park housing complex.
Police do not know if this will end the cycle of violence associated with the case.
The Chronicle Herald reports that shortly after White's death, Gabriel was charged assaulting and threatening White's mother.
Then in April 2012, Gabriel was the apparent victim of a brazen daylight shooting at a Fairview area barbershop. Gabriel suffered a gunshot wound to the hand but would not cooperate with police or testify at the trial.
