Cape Breton RCMP say impaired driving suspected in fatal hit and run

A 42-year-old man from Sydney Mines, N.S., is expected to face charges after a 40-year-old motorcyclist from Bras d'Or, N.S., was struck and later died from his injuries.

A Cape Breton man is expected to face criminal charges after a fatal hit and run on the Trans-Canada Highway in Bras d'Or, N.S., on Saturday evening.

RCMP said a 42-year-old man from Sydney Mines, N.S., was driving a sedan and struck a 40-year-old motorcyclist from Bras d'Or, who suffered life-threatening injuries and died in hospital the next day.

The driver of the car fled, but was found nearby on Brady Drive in Groves Point exhibiting signs of impairment, according to the RCMP.

Police said he was taken to the North Sydney RCMP detachment, where his blood alcohol level registered 0.09, which is 0.01 over the legal limit for driving.

The collision remains under investigation, but criminal charges are expected, RCMP said.

The driver was eventually released and is expected to appear in Sydney provincial court at a later date.
