Two people are believed to have drowned in separate incidents in Prince Edward County over the weekend, according to Ontario Provincial Police (OPP). One of the two is still missing.

In a news release Monday morning, OPP said they were called shortly before 6 p.m. Saturday to a resort on County Road 18, which borders East Lake near Sandbanks Provincial Park.

When officers arrived, firefighters, paramedics and members of the public were attempting "life-saving measures" on a 51-year-old man from Toronto. He was pronounced dead at hospital.

Police were called to the second incident on East Lake just before 6 p.m. Sunday.

They said four people were out on the lake in two canoes and decided to go swimming, but were unable to climb back into the canoes. One person made it back to shore and two others were rescued by a bystander with a boat, police said.

The fourth person's body could not be located and is still missing, according to police. OPP's underwater search and recovery unit will be at the lake today.

Neither individual has been identified.
