Man taken into custody after fatal stabbing near Algonquin College

One woman has died and another is in critical condition after a stabbing in Ottawa's west end near Algonquin College.

A man is in custody following a fatal stabbing in the city's west end that left one woman dead and another in critical condition Tuesday evening. 

Police were searching for Hamid Ayoub, 54, who they say was taken into custody shortly after 11 p.m. 

The Ottawa Police Service said in a news release that the incident happened in the 1800 block of Baseline Road at about 6:45 p.m.

Officers blocked off several areas, including a portion of a convenience store parking lot, a nearby bus stop and the front yard of a residential building.

The fatal stabbing is Ottawa's ninth homicide of 2021.
