Cornwall signs on for 10 more years of bus service

The Town of Cornwall has renewed a transit agreement that will see buses rolling in the town for at least the next 10 years.

Buses were almost axed in 2014

The Town of Cornwall, P.E.I. has renewed a transit agreement that will see buses rolling in the town for at least the next 10 years.

The agreement is a major turnaround for the town. In December 2014 council gathered on a stormy night and voted to cut funding for the buses. Councillors argued it was little used and expensive.
Councillors heard about the importance of the bus service during the fall campaign, says Mayor Minerva McCourt. (Town of Cornwall )

Council late decided to let the buses continue and leave the question for a new council that was elected in the fall.

Transit became a major issue during the municipal election, and now the new town council has voted in favour of renewing the deal with T3 Transit for 10 years.

"We heard at the door that the bus system was vital to the town of Cornwall," said Mayor Minerva McCourt, who came to office in the fall election.

"As the town of Cornwall continues to grow, we're hoping that ridership and all of that will increase through time. This council has taken very strongly that they wish to continue the Trius bus service and that is where this new look is coming from."

McCourt said the town will work with the transit company to ensure the bus times and routes best fit the needs of residents and the growing town.
