Mother's Day lobster bounces back

Mother's Day was a busy time for people selling lobster on P.E.I.

Many Islanders decided to treat their moms to a lobster dinner, following a down year in 2013. Last year lobster fishermen had their boats tied up over the Mother's Day weekend in protest of low prices, and that had many Islanders choosing another Mother's Day treat in solidarity.

But there has been no protest this year, and MacKinnon's Lobster Pound owner Steve Larkin said sales returned.

"For the seafood market down here, Mother's Day is traditionally one of the biggest days of the year," said Larkin.

"Everyone's still waiting for that first feed of lobster. It's a good Island tradition to get lobsters for their mother."

Larkin said people didn't feel conflicted about enjoying lobster on Mother's Day this year.

The weekend was also a busy one for florists, with Mother's Day coinciding with UPEI graduation and two large local cultural events.
