New liquor store for Montague
Liquor store will be added on to the Atlantic Superstore
The eastern P.E.I. town of Montague is getting a new liquor store, one that will actually be inside the town limits.
The current store is about a five-minute drive south of the town. The new store will be added to the Atlantic Superstore.
Jamie MacLeod, director of corporate services with the P.E.I. Liquor Commission, said the new location will be bigger, about 7,500 square feet, as opposed to the current 6,000 square feet. It will also have fridges to offer chilled products.
Higher cost, but increased profit
The cost per square foot will be higher at the new location, said MacLeod, but with 25 per cent more stock available, and the higher traffic location, he expects profits to grow.
"The increased size of the building and the increased product selection, an improved venue, the improved location," he said, listing off the benefits.
"At the end of the day, we would see, approximately, an annual increase to the province of approximately $200,000."
The Liquor Commission has been leasing space from the Montague Community Welfare League since the 1980s, but MacLeod said an expansion at that location isn't possible.
Construction on the new store could start as early as next week, with an opening planned for June.
