CBC's Peter Mansbridge receives lifetime achievement award
Honour given out at Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) awards gala
Peter Mansbridge has been honoured with a lifetime achievement award at the Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) awards gala, recognizing the remarkable decades-long career of CBC News's chief correspondent.
Mansbridge is receiving the award Saturday night during a gala event in Toronto as part of the RTDNA's national conference.
- CBC Toronto wins 2 national awards for Jays coverage, local radio newscast
- CBC Edmonton wins 4 national RTDNA awards
- CBC journalists in Quebec recognized with 2 national RTDNA awards
- 3 B.C. CBC broadcasters from B.C. win awards at RTDNA national conference
During his storied career as a public broadcaster — including 27 years as anchor of The National — Mansbridge has provided Canadians with comprehensive coverage of the most significant stories taking place both at home and abroad.
He's conducted an estimated 15,000 interviews, speaking to countless Canadian and global leaders, as well as other notable personalities from the worlds of politics, sports and entertainment.
'Canadian icon'
"For the last 45 years, Peter has told our stories and helped us understand our world," CBC's editor-in-chief Jennifer McGuire said Saturday, introducing Mansbridge. "He has chronicled our history. He is a Canadian icon in the true sense of the word."
"There are now more ways to reach Canadians, to reach the world than ever before," Mansbridge said when he took the stage to accept his award.
"We know the power of storytelling. Those stories change minds. They change opinions. They change lives. That's what journalism can do."
Mansbridge began his journalism career in 1968 in Churchill, Manitoba, helping to develop CBC Radio's news service for Northern Canada. He went on to become a radio reporter in Winnipeg in 1971 before joining CBC Television in 1972. He was named chief correspondent and anchor in 1988.
Mansbridge was named to the Canadian News Hall of Fame earlier this year and made an officer of the Order of Canada in 2008.
Global Television's Tom Clark was also awarded a lifetime achievement award at the RTDNA event on Saturday, when a total of 64 awards were handed out.
