A child has been airlifted to hospital after the boat he was in capsized on Lake Mindemoya on Monday.

Ontario Provincial Police in Little Current said a father and his 8-year-old son were fishing in a small plastic boat near the shore in the afternoon when a fishing hook got caught in the child's life jacket.

Police said the life jacket was taken off to get the hook out when the boat capsized suddenly, sending the man and child into the water.

Police said the child did not immediately surface.

In a press release, OPP said he was found near shore by people who saw the spill, and that the boy had "taken on water".

The boy was airlifted to a children's hospital for treatment, and his current condition was not released.

Police are reminding people to wear life jackets at all times on the water, warning "tragedies like this can happen in an instant."
