Should wearing your life jacket be the law? Some callers think so

People in northeastern Ontario are weighing in on whether wearing a life jacket should be made mandatory.

Ontario's current legislation says people must have as many life vests or personal floatation devices as there are passengers in a boat — but they don't have to wear them.

Inspector Mark Andrews would like to see that changed.

Last year, of the 20 drownings in Ontario waterways, 17 of those people were not wearing life vests, Andrews said. And, there has already been two deaths in northeastern Ontario this year, he added.

Here's a sample of the calls that came in to CBC Sudbury's current affairs radio show Morning North after an interview with Andrews.

  • "There's no way you [would have] time to put a life jacket on in cold water."
  • "It's so stupid not to wear them — we just didn't know that back in the day."
  • "I think there's a lot of laws out there that they should scrutinize."
