Delaine Copenace death devastates Kenora, Ont. residents
People in the city of Kenora, Ont., are struggling to come to terms with the death of 16-year old Delaine Copenace.
Her remains were found in Lake of the Woods near Water Street Tuesday morning, three weeks after she was first reported missing.
Extensive searches had been done around the Kenora area, and as far away as Winnipeg, where she had friends and family.
Brian Ostaff, who manages the Subway restaurant in Kenora, told CBC News he knows Delaine's sister and had been helping the family by posting pictures of Delaine inside the restaurant.
"There's posters all over the store, posters all over around town and it was sad today because her sister came in here, and she asked us to take down the sign and that was pretty sad," he said.
Ostaff said the whole community is devastated.
"I heard she was a really nice girl … heard she was quiet and stuck to herself and what not," he said.
"So it was kind of a shock to hear that she went missing … it's pretty heartbreaking."
Ontario Provincial Police say there is an on-going investigation and won't say whether foul play is suspected.
Copenace was reported missing to the OPP on Feb. 28 and had been the subject of an active missing person investigation.
NAN releases statement
"Words cannot describe the grief we feel over the tragic loss of this young woman and our thoughts and prayers are with Delaine's family, friends, Onigaming First Nation and the Kenora community at this difficult time," said Nishnawbe Aski Nation Deputy Grand Chief Anna Betty Achneepineskum in a written release.
"We do not yet know the circumstances surrounding her disappearance, but this sad loss only strengthens our resolve to do everything possible to protect our youth and ensure that the scope of such disappearances are fully investigated."
The Copenace family also released a statement to the media, asking for privacy.
"The family of Delaine Copenace would like to thank everyone for the continuous support and prayers," it said.
"At this time Delaine's loved ones are asking that their privacy be respected, as they take some time together to grieve the devastating loss of their daughter, sister and granddaughter and friend."
