Thunder Bay Police Service, Office of the Fire Marshal involved in investigation
The Office of the Fire Marshal has confirmed one person has died after a tent fire at a homeless encampment in Thunder Bay, Ont.
Thunder Bay Fire Rescue says firefighters responded to the scene at Kam River Park around 4 a.m. ET on Wednesday. They quickly extinguished the fire using a hand line, the fire department said in a news release.
Emergency medical services attended the scene and two people were taken to the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre for medical evaluation.
"I can confirm that there were two persons injured as well as a single fatality," Sean Driscoll, senior strategic communications advisor with the provincial Office of the Fire Marshal, told CBC News in an email Thursday.
The Thunder Bay Police Service (TBPS) remains at the scene.
"At this time, investigators with the Office of the Fire Marshal are still on scene conducting the investigation to determine the cause, origin, and circumstance of the fire on Simpson Street, however no cause has been determined at this time," Driscoll said.
The fire damage was limited to one tent, according to the fire department.
"Thunder Bay Fire Rescue reminds the public to use heating sources safely — keep heaters, candles and open flames away from flammable materials, and never leave them unattended," the fire department said in its news release.
