A man in his 70s is dead and a woman is in critical condition after an apartment fire in Toronto's east end Sunday morning.

Toronto Fire say crews responded to an apartment building in the Gerrard Street East and Glenside Avenue area shortly after midnight on Sunday.

When crews arrived, they were told there were two people trapped in a unit on the fourth floor, Toronto Fire division commander Paul O'Brien told reporters Sunday.

O'Brien said the two occupants were rescued by firefighters and taken to the building's lobby for medical care.

One of the patients had vital signs absent and was transported to the hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries, O'Brien said.

Toronto police said earlier in a post to X that a man in his 70s was pronounced dead and a woman in her 70s is in hospital in critical condition as a result of the fire.

"On behalf of Toronto Fire, our deepest condolences to loved ones and family," said O'Brien.

He said a third patient was injured while trying to escape the fire and was taken to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

No other units were affected and no other occupants were displaced due to the fire, said O'Brien.

Crews will remain at the scene Sunday to investigate the origin and cause of the fire. The Office of the Fire Marshal has been notified and will also attend the scene.
