In 1988, CBC host Peter Mansbridge was set to begin his tenure as host of the National, arguably becoming the de facto face — and voice — of the network.

Before assuming that role, Mansbridge visited the CBC studios in Thunder Bay to chat with Terry MacLeod of morning show "The Great Northwest."

According to Matt Prokopchuk, host of "Wayback with Matt," Mansbridge was giving a public lecture at Lakehead University, and dropped by CBC studios the next morning.

Thunder Bay staff immediately put Mansbridge to work, getting him to read the morning headlines.
