Rural schools closed and some bus routes cancelled in Thunder Bay, Ont., as city gets ready for storm

Rural schools are closed Wednesday in Thunder Bay, Ont., and all rural school bus routes are cancelled as the city and surrounding area expects up to 30 cm of snow.

Rural schools are closed Wednesday in Thunder Bay, Ont., and all rural school bus routes are cancelled for the day as much of the northwest region prepares for yet another spring snowstorm.

Environment Canada has issued multiple weather alerts for the northwest, including snowfall warnings for Thunder Bay, Atikokan, northshore and Greenstone areas. Snowfall is expected to begin this morning and continue through to Thursday.

The weather agency is forecasting 20 to 30 centimetres of snow, and possibly more over higher terrain west of Thunder Bay.

School closures today

  • The Lakehead District School Board has closed rural schools today, including Crestview, Five Mile, Gorham Ware, McKenzie, Nor'wester View, Kakabeka, Valley Central and Whitefish Valley schools.
  • Public board city schools are open in Thunder Bay.
  • The Thunder Bay Catholic Board, French Catholic, and French public schools are open in the city.

School bus route cancellations

  • Student Transportation Services of Thunder Bay has cancelled all rural school bus routes Wednesday.
  • More information can be found on the Student Transportation Services of Thunder Bay website.

Thunder Bay transit

  • Thunder Bay Transit said bus routes may experience potential delays today due to changing road conditions. People are encouraged to check the city's Transit app or online for updates.
