Thunder Bay shoppers flock to Target looking for deals

Hundreds of shoppers hit the Thunder Bay Target store on Thursday – hoping to cash in on day one of the retail giant's Canadian liquidation.

Diane Laaksonen said the store was busier than she'd ever seen it.

"And very long lines," she added. "[It's a] slow wait but people seem fairly patient."

Shoppers across the country told reporters Thursday they feel let-down by the lack of great deals.

But Conner Harris was ambivalent.

He said he went to Target at Intercity Shopping Centre looking for a pair of work pants.

"It was all right," he said about his purchase. "It's not as good as I thought it would be, but it's better than spending full price."

Laaksonen said she was focusing on specific items on her shopping trip – purchases that couldn't wait until a possible price drop.

"I imagine people will keep coming back," she said.  "They're sort of scouting out what the sales are like."

Target announced plans last month to close its 133 stores in Canada, resulting in the layoff of about 17,600 staff.  The company is believed to have between 150 and 200 workers in Thunder Bay.

The retailer expects to have left Canada by early May.
