York Regional Police have released a video that shows four people breaking into a home in Richmond Hill, Ont. early Monday.

Police said in a news release on Tuesday that they are seeking five suspects in all, including a getaway driver.

The home invasion happened in the area of Bayview Avenue and Ambler Lane. Officers responded to a call about the incident at about 3:30 a.m. Monday.

Const. James Dickson, spokesperson for York Regional Police, said in an interview on Tuesday that the incident appears to have been targeted.

"Now this is quite a concerning home invasion because this is happening overnight at three in the morning. This is when everyone's expected to be in bed at home," Dickson said.

In the video, four people are shown forcing their way into a home.

Three walk up the steps. One kicks the door while another appears to hold the door. Then the person who held the door is shown kicking it twice and breaking it open. The video then shows all four entering the house.

Police said the four confronted the homeowner and demanded money. At least one person was armed with a firearm.

"Very clearly, you can see at least one male has a hammer in his hand and a second male is armed with a firearm," Dickson said.

"They're pulling people out of bed in the middle of the night and made a demand for cash. Very fortunately, nobody was injured in this incident."

The four fled in a dark-coloured sedan driven by a fifth person. Police have not released a description of the suspects.

A small amount of property was taken in the incident, according to Dickson.

Dickson said these kinds of home invasions, in which the suspects interact with homeowners, are frightening. He said people should always keep personal safety top of mind if they're ever in a similar situation.

"Property can be replaced, but lives cannot, especially when we're dealing with people that are willing to come in here and confront someone in the middle of the night with a firearm," he said. "We don't know who this person is, we don't know what they're capable of, and the last thing we want to do is see someone hurt."

Anyone with information is urged to call police.
