Toronto police are asking for witnesses to the fatal shooting of a 15-year-old boy to come forward as they continue to search for a suspect more than a month after his death.

Jahkai Jack, of Toronto, was shot near Emmett Avenue and Jane Street on the evening of June 7.

The shooting happened after Jack and a few friends met up with another group of people for a "gathering" in the area, said Det.-Sgt. Phillip Campbell of the Toronto Police Service at a news conference Wednesday.

At some point, police believe a person in that group began a verbal exchange with Jack, and, "without provocation," shot him, Campbell said.

"He was not involved in any gangs or any kind of criminality," Campbell said.

"This was a completely unprovoked act of violence against a 15-year-old boy."

Campbell said police believe the suspect is male and was wearing dark clothing at the time of the shooting, but couldn't provide any other descriptors. No weapon has been recovered, he said.

Campbell asked the person responsible to "do the right thing" and turn themselves in to police.

"You need to know what you did devastated a family," he said.

"And to the people that were there that night who may have witnessed this, I'm asking you too to do the right thing and get ahold of us, help us find out what happened that night."

Police also released a photo of Jack on Wednesday.

Jack is the city's 14th homicide victim of the year.
