Man facing charges after shopping cart launched at Toronto e-bike rider

A man has been arrested and charged for allegedly launching a shopping cart in the path of an e-bike rider in Toronto in a video that was shared online this week. 

Incident happened on Tuesday near Danforth and Monarch Park avenues, police say

A man has been arrested and charged for allegedly launching a shopping cart in the path of an e-bike rider in Toronto this week, in an incident that was captured on security camera footage.

It happened on Tuesday around 10 a.m. near Danforth and Monarch Park avenues, Toronto police said in a news release Thursday. 

The victim was travelling west on Danforth Avenue on an e-bike when a man pushed a shopping cart into his path, causing him to fall, the release said. He was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. 

A 47-year-old man from Toronto has been charged with mischief endangering life, assault with a weapon and assault causing bodily harm, the release said. 

He was scheduled to appear in court Thursday morning.

In security camera footage shared Wednesday on social media by lawyer and cycling advocate David Shellnutt, a man is seen walking along a city sidewalk pushing a shopping cart. The man then pushes the cart into the bike lane beside the sidewalk, hitting a man riding an e-bike. The man on the e-bike then crashes to the ground as the other man continues to walk away. 

Anyone with information is being asked to contact police or leave an anonymous tip with Crime Stoppers.
