Hamilton's fire department is expressing its condolences after reportedly finding a person dead in a burning east-end home Sunday.

Around noon, firefighters responded to 29 Mons Ave., where "heavy smoke and flames" were coming through the second-floor windows of a two-storey home, fire Chief Dave Cunliffe said in a statement Sunday.

Firefighters found a person who lives there but they had "succumbed to their injuries," Cunliffe said. No one else was home.

"At this time on behalf of all the members of the Hamilton Fire Department I would like to extend our sincere condolences to the family members and friends impacted by today's fire," he said.

A neighbour who attempted to enter the home was treated for smoke inhalation, Cunliffe added.

He said damage to the home is estimated to be $500,000.

The Office of the Fire Marshal and Hamilton Police Service continue to investigate.
