Man shot by police in Markham condo unit has died: SIU
Police have said officers found a man 'actively attacking' a woman in condo Wednesday
A man shot by a police officer in a condo in Markham earlier this week has died, the Special Investigations Unit says.
The 34-year-old was shot by police Wednesday morning after officers responded to a welfare check call.
The shooting happened at a condo building around 4:40 a.m. on Buchanan Drive near Village Parkway, said York Regional Police Const. Kevin Nebrija.
The province's police watchdog says the man died in hospital Friday morning.
According to the SIU, a resident called police to report a dispute from another unit. When they arrived, police said officers found a man "actively attacking" a woman inside a condominium unit.
"Officers entered the unit, and a short time later, one officer discharged his firearm one time. A man was struck," said the SIU.
He was then taken to the hospital with serious injuries, according to the SIU.
A woman was also taken to the hospital with serious injuries. The SIU said she is in stable condition.
The SIU is called in to investigate any time police are involved in an incident that results in death, serious injuries, allegations of sexual assault, and/or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
