A man was shot by police in Markham early Wednesday morning after officers responded to a welfare check call.

The shooting happened at a condo building on Buchanan Drive near Village Parkway, said York Regional Police Const. Kevin Nebrija.

Officers were responding to a call for a welfare check at around 4:40 a.m., Nebrija said. The call came from a resident of the condominium complex, the province's police watchdog said in a news release Wednesday.

The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) is probing the shooting.

When they arrived, police said officers found a man "actively attacking" a woman inside a condominium unit. At some point, at least one officer opened fire and shot the man, Nebrija said.

Both the man and woman were transported to a local trauma centre with life-threatening injuries.

Nebrija said police are still working to determine the relationship between the two individuals.

The man is currently in critical, life-threatening condition while the woman is in stable condition, the SIU said in a news release.
