Ontario's police watchdog is investigating after a York Regional Police officer shot and injured a 30-year-old man in Toronto Thursday evening.

Officers were attempting to stop the driver of a car that had been reported stolen near Kennedy Road and Steeles Avenue E. in Markham around 7 p.m., according to a news release from the province's Special Investigations Unit (SIU).

Kristy Denette, spokesperson for the SIU, said York police officer first came across the stolen vehicle and followed with no lights or sirens. She said there was no chase between police and the driver of the car.

Denette said Toronto police officers then responded to calls of a stolen vehicle. She said "a number of police vehicles" boxed the car in, and the driver collided with police vehicles.

The car then stopped near Kennedy Road and Bonis Avenue in Scarborough.

Denette says following that, a York police officer shot multiple times into the vehicle.

"It struck the driver and he has multiple gunshot wounds. He remains in hospital today in stable condition," she said.

The driver was the only occupant in the car, the news release said.

Roads were closed in the area on Thursday night but have since reopened.

Anyone with information about the incident, including photos or videos, is asked to contact the SIU.

The SIU is an independent agency that investigates the conduct of police officers in incidents that may have resulted in death, serious injury, the discharge of a firearm or allegations of sexual assault.
