Drones will light up the night sky in LaSalle for a Canada Day show

It's a first for LaSalle, says Mayor Crysal Meloche

Tomorrow night a drove of drones will fly over LaSalle, lighting up the night sky and showing Canadian pride. The themed drone show for Canada Day will be a first for the town.

It'll take the place of fireworks, Mayor Crystal Meloche said — something a little different, especially since the town recently hosted fireworks during the annual Strawberry Festival in early June.

"We really wanted to do something unique ... so the drone show seemed like something fun and and different compared to our neighbours," she said. "So it's all kind of the themes to really embrace that feel of being proud of being Canadian."

Meloche says she saw a drone show for the first time at a Detroit Tigers game, planting the seed for a similar show in LaSalle.

"It's really, truly something special to see them all go up in the air and just totally change into different pictures and patterns," she said.

The drones will fly in the sky in formation, creating different designs with lights. Since it's Canada Day, the pictures will all be on a Canadian theme.

Meloche said the show offers an alterative to what's planned in neighbouring municipalities, many of which are hosting fireworks. It's also much quieter, she said, a benefit for kids and pets who can be frightened by the sound of fireworks. And finally, it has a lower environmental impact because there's no smoke.

It's the first time in many years the town will host a Canada Day event, she said, something they don't typically do because Strawberry Festival is always just a few weeks before.

"But with everything going on this year, we really felt like it was important to embrace the Canada Day and show how proud we are to be Canadian."

The show is set to begin at 10 p.m. and will be visible from LaSalle Landing and surrounding area. Find more details on the town's website
