Wheatley's library could reopen as soon as Thursday, the Municipality of Chatham-Kent says, after gas bubbled up from the ground, prompting an evacuation late last week.

"Following last week's gas event, which took place at the rear of the library property, crews have been working to ensure the safety of the site," the town said in a statement.

The town says the library is currently closed and will be closed on Wednesday, July 2 "but if all goes well, the library will reopen for regular hours at 4 p.m. on Thursday, July 3."

The town said a thorough investigation will continue to take place before the library re-opens, and the town will provide a further update confirming the reopening time

The gas leak was discovered Thursday afternoon, prompting the evacuation of homes within about 100 metres of the library, though residents returned home overnight into Friday morning.
