Installation underway on 10 new red light cameras in Windsor
The 10 new camers will join 10 the city installed in 2021.
Windsor will have 10 new red light cameras operating before the end of the year, the City of Windsor says.
Installation on the new cameras began about three weeks ago and installation is expected to be complete in two months.
From there, the city will undertake a notice period. The cameras will be fully operational within six months, said Ian Day, the city's senior manager of transportation.
"Every location will be signed in all four directions. We'll have a media release on our website ... to include all the sites," Day said.
The city's decision to add 10 new cameras comes after the first 10, installed in 2021, brought success: Day says the city recorded a 20.5 per cent reduction in injuries at the intersections that had cameras.
The camera take two photos, one with the vehicles entering the intersection and a second as they proceed through the intersection. The cameras are motion triggered after a red light, the city says.
Day says locations are chosen for installation based on city and Windsor police crash data. The city studied its crash data from 2018 to 2023 in developing the list of camera locations.
"We use that list because not every site is a suitable location for red light cameras," he said. "We have to have the sight lines for the cameras, no obstructions and the the actual property area to put the cameras up on.
"Some of the sites aren't eligible and we just keep moving down the collision list based upon that data."
Day said the city doesn't currently have plans to expand the program beyond these 20 cameras, but staff will report back on the findings and results from this new batch of cameras in the next one to two years.
"It is a successful program and that's why we went with [10] more."
The city's new red light cameras will be installed at the following intersections:
- Lauzon Parkway at Tecumseh Road East.
- Provincial Road at Walker Road.
- Lauzon Parkway at Forest Glade Drive.
- Central Avenue at North Service Road/Temple Drive.
- Northwood Street at Dominion Boulevard.
- Labelle Street at Dominion Boulevard.
- Tecumseh Road East at Pillette Road.
- Lauzon Line at Lauzon Parkway.
- Wyandotte Street West at Crawford Avenue.
- Tecumseh Road East at Jefferson Boulevard.
