True Blood musical in the works, says show composer

As TV cable hit True Blood ramps up to its final season, the composer behind the show's instrumental scores is already at work on a new extension of the supernatural tale: a musical.

Based on Charlaine Harris' novel series The Southern Vampire Mysteries, HBO series True Blood debuts its seventh and final season on Sunday.

Composer Nathan Barr shared details of a stage musical he's creating based on the story of the show's heroine, Sookie Stackhouse, at a final season premiere event in Hollywood Tuesday night.

"I think we're really going to try to return to the roots of the show," Barr, who has worked on all seven seasons of the show, told reporters.

"There's no guarantees [for a Broadway run]...but I think the direction we're heading in is really exciting."

Starring Canadian-born, New Zealand actress Anna Paquin as Stackhouse, True Blood follows the adventures of a telepathic waitress living in the fictional Louisiana town of Bon Temps, in a world where vampires and humans live an uneasy co-existance.

Actor Stephen Moyer, Paquin's real-life husband as well as her True Blood co-star, has helped Barr with vocal samples for the potential musical, which the composer has already pitched to HBO and show-creator Alan Ball.

Moyer showcased his singing abilities as Captain Georg von Trapp last fall during NBC's live TV adaptation of The Sound of Music, led by country star Carrie Underwood.
