Plizzanet Earth: Petition calls for Snoop Dogg narrate Planet Earth

Sir David Attenborough is, by and large, the most iconic narrator of nature documentaries on Earth today.

Voted Britain's "finest national treasures" in 2011, the now 89-year-old broadcaster has more than 60 years of experience in his field, dozens of prestigious awards, and a special place in the hearts of nature lovers spanning multiple demographics worldwide.  

Who better to succeed him as the host of BBC's Planet Earth than an American gangster rapper who literally has an animal in his name?

Snoop Dogg (or Lion, as it once briefly was) has been inadvertently nominated to narrate an entire season of the BBC Natural History documentary series, despite no plans being announced for new episodes of the TV program since it first aired in 2006.

"Get Snoop Dogg to Narrate Whole Season of Planet Earth" reads the title of a change.org petition addressed to Animal Planet, Discovery Communications, the BBC and Snoop, whose given name is Calvin Broadus, Jr.

"We the people have agreed – we want Snoop Dogg to narrate full episodes of Planet Earth!"

While relatively slow on the uptake, the campaign – which was started on Jan. 18 by Kelly Ooton of Lincoln, Neb. – exploded this weekend thanks in part to some love from the Big Boss Dogg himself.

Snoop shared a link to the petition with his 8.4 million Instagram and 13.2 million Twitter followers on Thursday when it still had just under 8,000 signatures.

By Monday, it had been signed by more than 50,000 people – a benchmark that would have warranted an official response from The White House had it been created on the U.S. government's website before the signature threshold was raised in 2013.

Strange as the idea of Snoop narrating Planet Earth may seem to some, it didn't come out of left field.

The Long Beach, Calif. native has already been proving he's got what it takes to host nature documentaries by doing just that in a recurring Jimmy Kimmel Live sketch called "Plizzanet Earth."

"Snoop Dogg is a lover of animals and nature and from time to time, he shares his wisdom with us in what many call the greatest nature and wildlife show of all-time," reads the description of one Plizzanet Earth video on Kimmel's YouTube channel. "It's time now to learn about Tree Frogs in this new edition of #PlizzanetEarth."

Plizzanet Earth was a hit when it made its debut on Jimmy Kimmel Live in 2014, and the segments continue to spread fast and far online each time a new one is released.

This may explain why Ooton's petition is doing so well.

It is unclear, however, if those signing it want Snoop to dub over Attenborough's voice on an entire, previously-aired season of Planet Earth, or if they want him to host a new season altogether.

New episodes of Planet Earth are no longer being created, but the producers behind it are working on a new series for Netflix called Our Planet set to air in 2019.

Snoop hasn't publicly expressed a desire to roll "nature documentary host" into his already busy career as a rapper, producer and entrepreneur, but he's been known to take on less-conventional work projects in the past.

The Internet wouldn't mind if Attenborough dropped a preemptive diss track over the beat of Gin & Juice either way, though. Just in case.
