Snoop Dogg's Instagram error helps promote remote Romanian village
Rapper was only 10,000 kilometres (and a vowel) off from the right location
Snoop Dogg was just one vowel and over 10,000 kilometres away from Bogata, Romania, when he tagged the wrong location on an Instagram photo. But the small village is thankful for the mistake.
Thousands of Romanian Instagram users began to ironically congratulate the U.S. rapper for choosing to visit the village of 2,000 people.
Meanwhile, Snoop Dogg was actually in Bogotá, Colombia when he posted the selfie to Instagram.
A tourist website even emerged from an enterprising Romanian media company. The site referred to Bogata as the "best place for chillin' in Romania."
"Snoop Dogg checked into Bogata, Mures by mistake--but you don't have to!" the company said to invite tourists.
Bogata mayor Laszlo Barta said although it was unintentional, it was good advertisement for the village, according to The Associated Press.
The tourism website, which suggests landmarks, restaurants and places to stay, also took a jab at Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders for his comment about Romanians having faster Internet speeds than some Americans.
"Internet speed," the website said, "Maybe not as high as in the capital city of Romania (we're looking at you, Bernie Sanders), but we'd say it is pretty good. Good enough to quickly upload a selfie."
Balkan Insider reports that the village has not changed much after the high-profile mistake: "In the meantime, life is quiet and calm in Bogata. Most of the 2,000 people in the village are not much interested in what it is being said about them on the Internet. Most do not know who Snoop Dogg is, either."
