What do dalmatians and bees have in common? Scientist and artist Sam Droege says he needs one to prepare the other to expand his bee species inventory. He says that the way dalmatian tail hairs are forked at their ends makes them the perfect cleaning brush for bees. Droege is creating a photographic inventory of all bee species in North America.
Now, he has taken to Twitter looking for Dalmatian tail hairs.
Droege's bee inventory is considered one of the world's largest. He uses dalmatian hair to clean pollen and other particles off the bees as they prepare for their photo shoot. He tells As It Happens host Carol Off that he considers his project to be "wedding photography for insects."
