This is your captain drinking…
Drinking alcohol is a common way to handle the stress and anxiety of air travel but it's usually the passengers, not the pilots.
On July 19, two Canadian Air Transat pilots, Jean-Francois Perreault and Imran Zafar Syed, were pulled from the cockpit after members of their crew suspected them of being drunk. The airmen were reportedly belligerent and aggressive long before the routine flight check at Glasgow Airport had even begun.
The incident became a source of comedy on this week's episode of Because News.
"You wouldn't be able to tell from the announcements though because I feel like they always sound drunk," joked comedian and panelist Aisha Alfa. "The last two times I've been on planes they've said we were going to the wrong destination."
Host Gavin Crawford heartily agreed. "I've had that too. Where they're just… welcome aboard to this flight to Halifax. Oh no Calgary."
Crawford and Alfa admitted that they've never voiced any of their bottle-to-throttle concerns about the pilots they've just handed their lives to.
"I should have spoken up. Are they drunk?" Alfa remembered asking herself, then dismissing her fears as she prioritized arrival over worries. "I really needed to get there."
