Vancouver's Sochi rep champions gay rights in Russia

Jian speaks with Vancouver city councillor Tim Stevenson, a man who is no stranger to breaking ground for gay rights. In the face of Russia's anti-gay law, it's no coincidence that the openly gay trailblazer was chosen as the city's official representative at the Sochi Olympics.

Stevenson says he's felt a whole range of emotions since landing in Sochi, where he is determined to be much more than a spectator. He's already started immersing himself in the culture -- having visited the one and only gay club in the area -- and organized high-level meetings with everyone from IOC officials to the Russian Orthodox Church. 

His goal: to push for the inclusion of sexual orientation in the Olympic charter. 

"This is the civil rights movement of our time," he says, adding that Canada is "a beacon to the world" and an example of how transformation can happen peacefully.
