Anna Kendrick, star of the surprise hit Pitch Perfect, returns to musicals with The Last Five Years. The film, based on an off-Broadway show of the same name, tells the story of a struggling actress and a rising novelist who fall in and out of love. (Don't worry, that's the premise, not a spoiler.)

The Tony and Oscar-nominated actress joins Jian to discuss her role in the unapologetically sincere film, why she's returned to musicals after saying she was "done with singing" and what she makes of the way The Last Five Years frames love.

"The lesson for me is that: even if you are not meant to be with somebody forever, to just enjoy the journey that you take ... and to feel grateful for the time that you have with them," she tells Jian.

"A failed relationship was not a waste of time. You always learn something."
