Woman dead after stabbing in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside

A  55-year-old woman has died after being stabbed at a residence in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside.

Police say that an altercation arose shortly after noon on Friday between two residents of a building at 215 Princess Ave.

Neighbour Jacqueline Cousley had moved in across the street just two days earlier.

"I heard these blood-curdling screams," said Cousley.

"It was just a scream, like, 'Someone help me,' kind of scream, but there were no words or anything."

The 55-year-old was stabbed inside her apartment building, and then fled out the front door, according to police.

Cousley said she went outside a few minutes later and found the victim lying on the street.

"She was barefoot, she had no jacket on, or nothing," she said.

"Her head was bleeding, like, dramatically. It was all over her clothes, her blouse and everything," said Cousley. 

"There was blood everywhere and people were asking her if she was okay, and there was no answer ... and she looked like she wasn't breathing. Then they started doing CPR."

Paramedics with the B.C. Ambulance Service soon arrived and took her to the hospital, but she couldn't be saved.

A 42-year-old man was taken into custody, and police are recommending a charge of murder.

Police said the man and the woman lived in separate suites in the building, and it is unclear whether they knew each other.

The killing is the twelfth homicide in the city this year.
