A nine-year-old girl is dead after two cars crashed Friday on Highway 36 near Killam, Alta., police say.

Four other people from the same vehicle as the girl were also sent to hospital: a 13-year-old boy, another nine-year-old girl and a 43-year-old man are in critical condition, while an 11-year-old boy is in stable condition, RCMP said in a news release.

The man and woman in the other vehicle, both 72 years old, sustained minor injuries from the crash, which occurred at the intersection of Highway 13.

The intersection was closed for a time, but has since reopened.

A full investigation is ongoing, police say. But Cst. Cory Riggs, an Alberta RCMP spokesperson, told CBC News that preliminary findings suggests that the seniors were travelling southbound on Highway 36, ran a stop sign and hit the other vehicle that was travelling westbound.

STARS was unable to fly to the scene because of poor weather.

A large swath of the province was walloped with a spring snowstorm that started Thursday. At the time, Environment and Climate Change Canada had urged drivers to prepare for quickly changing and deteriorating travel conditions.

Killam is a town about 140 kilometres southeast of Edmonton.
