RCMP in Blackfalds, Alta. — roughly halfway between Calgary and Edmonton. — say a 71-year-old woman from Newfoundland and Labrador has died after a four-vehicle crash on the Queen Elizabeth II Highway on Wednesday.

In a news release, the RCMP said the woman, who was a passenger in one of the vehicles, was dead upon arrival at the scene.

Four other people were taken by ambulance to hospital with non-life threatening injuries, and a family dog also died in the crash, the RCMP said.

Police remained on the scene for several hours through its investigation.

The RCMP said its initial investigation revealed that a Ford F350 pick-up struck a line of slower moving traffic, and alcohol is not believed to be a factor.
