4 dead after head-on collision in central Alberta

Four people from Maskwacis, Alta., are dead after a serious two-car collision that occurred late Saturday.

Four people are dead after a serious two-car collision that occurred late Saturday near Ponoka, Alta., RCMP said in a news release.

Just before 11 p.m., Ponoka RCMP received a report of a collision on Highway 2A near Township Road 434, about four kilometres north of the town, located 80 kilometres south of Edmonton.

RCMP said initial reports suggest the driver of a GMC Acadia was attempting to pass other cars when it struck a vehicle with three occupants.

The news release said emergency responders found a 41-year-old woman dead in the Acadia. In the other vehicle, two males, aged 14 and 26, were found dead.

And another 14-year-old girl was taken to hospital by a STARS helicopter but died from her injuries. 

All four are residents of Maskwacis, Alta., a community located about 20 kilometres north of Ponoka. 

Corrections

  • A previous version of this story stated that a 14-year-old boy had been airlifted to hospital. RCMP later provided a corrected news release stating the victim was a girl.
