Ontario's police watchdog is investigating after a teenager fell from a bridge outside of Kitchener Tuesday morning.

The SIU announced Wednesday that the teen had died.

The Special Investigations Unit says just before 4 a.m. on Tuesday, police responded to a report of a male in distress near Concession Street and Water Street S. in Cambridge.

They say officers located the 17-year-old boy standing on the railing of a bridge and determined he was in crisis. After attempting to negotiate with him, he fell into the Grand River below.

Emergency personnel located the teen and pulled him out of the water. He had no vital signs and CPR was performed. The teen was then taken to hospital in critical condition.

Three investigators and one forensic investigator have been assigned to the case.

The Waterloo Regional Police Service said officers responded to the call on Tuesday and as the SIU had invoked its mandate, would provide no further comment at this time.
