Ontario's police watchdog is investigating after a 46-year-old man fell to his death from a Toronto balcony early Tuesday morning.

The incident happened around 2 a.m., the province's Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said in a news release on Tuesday. Toronto police officers responded to a call about a person in a crisis at a condo near Church Street and The Esplanade.

Officers breached the door, found the man and attempted to negotiate with him, the release said.

"A short time later, the man fell from the balcony to the ground below," the news release said.

He was taken to hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

Three officers suffered non-life threatening injuries during the incident, Toronto police spokesperson Laura Brabant said in an email

Paramedics said they were called to 1 Church Street around 2:20 a.m. after reports of a fall. An adult man was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries, they said.

An SIU van was on scene outside an apartment building on Tuesday morning. One of the buildings windows appeared to be broken.

Church Street is currently closed from Front Street to The Esplanade.

Anyone with information about the incident, including videos or photos, is asked to contact the SIU.
