London police say they've charged a 30-year-old man after an adolescent girl was sexually assaulted by a male acquaintance in south London on Thursday evening.

The 12-year-old was in a grocery store on Ernest Avenue at about 6:10 p.m. when she was approached by an adult male acquaintance. The two talked and then left the store separately, police say.

The man followed to girl and a short distance away, in the area of Ernest Avenue and Lacey Crescent, the girl was sexually assaulted, according to police. The incident was captured on video surveillance and the girl told family members about what happened.

The police were called and family members provided police with details about the man's location, London police said in a statement.

The girl didn't sustain any physical injuries.

A 30-year-old London man has been charged with sexual assault on a person under 16 and sexual interference with a person under 16. The man remains in custody and will appear in London court Friday.
