RCMP were notified of the incident on the Fishing Lake winter ice road shortly before 4 p.m. Friday, police said in a news release on Monday.

When officers arrived, they learned that the two people in the vehicle, both from Little Grand Rapids in northeastern Manitoba, did not have seatbelts on at the time of the accident, and had been taken to the nursing station in Pauingassi First Nation with life-threatening injuries.

The passenger, 43, was pronounced dead, police say. The driver, 41, was flown to Winnipeg in critical condition, but has since been upgraded to stable.

A forensic collision reconstructionist has been called into the investigation, police say.
