Two 16-year-old boys who escaped from a youth correctional facility over the weekend are back in custody, police say.

The two teens escaped the Manitoba Youth Centre in Winnipeg shortly after 7 p.m. Friday, police said in a news release Tuesday.

Police didn't specify how the teens escaped, but said they found a way "through to the building's exterior."

Once they were outside, the two teens met a 17-year-old girl and an 18-year-old woman who were waiting in a nearby vehicle, police said.

They found three of the teens at a home on Furby Street, between Ellice Avenue and Broadway, shortly before midnight.

The two escapees tried to run away but were arrested after a brief chase, police said. The 18-year-old woman was arrested without incident.

A 17-year-old girl was arrested on Sunday.

The 16-year-olds were charged with escaping lawful custody and one of them was also charged with being unlawfully at large, police said.

The 17-year-old and 18-year-old were both charged with two counts of rescue or permitting an escape. They were released on an undertaking.
