Winnipeg Police say a 15-year-old boy is in custody after an unprovoked machete attack left a 68-year-old man with serious injuries on Friday.

On Friday around 8:20 p.m., a man was randomly assaulted on Henry Avenue, near the Disraeli Freeway, by a teenage boy armed with a machete, according to a police release.

Police say when they arrived on scene, a witness told them the 68-year-old man was walking past the Salvation Army when he was assaulted by a 15-year-old boy who was carrying a machete.

Witnesses surrounded the teen so he couldn't leave and flagged down police patrolling in the area, police said.

The teen was arrested, and police say two machetes were recovered during the arrest.

The victim was taken to hospital in unstable condition and has since been upgraded to stable, and police say he requires surgery to repair the damage done by the assault.

The 15-year-old boy has been charged with aggravated assault and possession of a weapon and was detained in custody. None of the allegations have been tested in court.
