Travis Sukkau's family gives games to hospitalized kids in his memory
Family starts charity aimed at donating board games, video games to children in care
Travis Sukkau's family is honouring his memory by starting a charity to help hospitalized children.
Sukkau, 19, went missing in Manitoba's Pembina Valley Provincial Park on Oct. 23. A body was found on Oct. 27 that was confirmed to be that of Sukkau two days later.
The Winkler teen's family said Wednesday they believe he died after trying to start a campfire.
His brother Steven Sukkau said Thursday Travis loved board games and video games. That love has inspired the Sukkau family to start raising money to buy and donate games to children who are sick and awaiting treatment in hospital.
"It is just the physical reality of not being able to give him a hug, and just talk with him like we used to. That's the hard part," said Steven. "I am very comforted knowing it's not the end, it's just goodbye for now."
Steven said the charity is helping the family cope at this difficult time.
"One day there will be a little kid who is going through a rough time and he will all of sudden have a smile on his face," said Steven. "It will be because of Travis, and I think for us, that gives us a lot of joy and hope."
Steven said he and his family are grateful for the support and prayers they have received from family, friends and the general public.
